How We Work

ApplEcon is a consulting firm of economists located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We provide antitrust litigation support, strategic business consulting, and merger analysis. Our expertise is in the economic analysis of both liability and damages issues related to business litigation and government regulatory matters. Our work spans a diverse range of issues in many industries. We have particularly extensive experience in the high technology sectors of telecommunications, the Internet, and computer hardware and software, as well as in the motor vehicle industry.

As economic consultants, we realize that our job extends beyond merely producing complex economic analyses; rather, our goal is to present robust analyses that can be easily understood by experts and non-experts alike. Our skill and diligence in learning the facts relevant to the client's case, along with our ability to make our analysis accessible, sets us apart.

At ApplEcon, we do not limit ourselves to generalizations about the functioning of markets or rely on attorneys to provide the relevant facts. Our approach is to learn the case-specific facts thoroughly and independently, and to know the facts better than the opposition. We are especially good at getting to know the technologies at issue in a case. We can therefore testify knowledgeably about the interaction between the technology and the economics. Our expert reports, affidavits, and oral testimony demonstrate our unusual commitment to factual discovery, together with extremely careful and detailed documentation of the factual basis for our opinions.

Our experience has convinced us that this approach works. Our analyses are credible and robust because they are consistent with the facts. Our models are convincing because we understand the relationships between technology and economic outcomes. Our testimony withstands cross-examination. Our credibility with judges and juries is enhanced because we take the time to understand the real world on which we are testifying.

We also recognize that the best economic analyses are those that decision makers can easily understand. We devote considerable attention to the communication of our methods and analyses to non-economists. For example, we prefer to present a simple method that is adequate to the task and easier to understand, rather than a more intellectually intriguing method that is unnecessarily complex. We are effective in presenting our work to a judge or a jury in a way that is not confusing or condescending, but easily accessible.

Our commitment includes providing the energy and flexibility to respond rapidly to difficult challenges that often arise with little warning in complex litigation. We have years of experience in reacting quickly and successfully to procedural and other surprises. We do everything feasible to provide quality analyses under pressure to assist our client.
